I’m writing to alert readers to a crucial email from a physician who has evidence vitamin D is protective against H1N1 and to ask you, the reader, to contact your representatives in Washington to help protect Americans, especially children, from H1N1 before winter comes.

Dear Dr. Cannell:

Your recent newsletters and video about Swine flu (H1N1) prompted me to convey our recent experience with an H1N1 outbreak at Central Wisconsin Center (CWC). Unfortunately, the state epidemiologist was not interested in studying it further so I pass it on to you since I think it is noteworthy.

CWC is a long-term care facility for people with developmental disabilities, home for approx. 275 people with approx. 800 staff. Serum 25-OHD has been monitored in virtually all residents for several years and patients supplemented with vitamin D.

In June, 2009, at the time of the well-publicized Wisconsin spike in H1N1 cases, two residents developed influenza-like illness (ILI) and had positive tests for H1N1: one was a long-term resident; the other, a child, was transferred to us with what was later proven to be H1N1.

On the other hand, 60 staff members developed ILI or were documented to have H1N1: of 17 tested for ILI, eight were positive. An additional 43 staff members called in sick with ILI. (Approx. 11-12 staff developed ILI after working on the unit where the child was given care, several of whom had positive H1N1 tests.)

So, it is rather remarkable that only two residents of 275 developed ILI, one of which did not develop it here, while 103 of 800 staff members had ILI. It appears that the spread of H1N1 was not from staff-to-resident but from resident-to-staff (most obvious in the imported case) and between staff, implying that staff were susceptible and our residents protected.

Sincerely,

Norris Glick, MD
Central Wisconsin Center
Madison, WI

Dear Dr. Glick:

This is the first hard data that I am aware of concerning H1N1 and vitamin D. It appears vitamin D is incredibly protective against H1N1. Dr. Carlos Carmago at Mass General ran the numbers in an email to me. Even if one excludes 43 staff members who called in sick with influenza, 0.73% of residents were affected, as compared to 7.5% of staff. This 10-fold difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). That is, the chance that this was a chance occurrence is one less than one in a thousand.

Second, if you read my last newsletter, you will see that children with neurological impairments, like the patients at your hospital, have accounted for 2/3 of the childhood deaths for H1N1 so far in the USA. That is, the CDC knows, because they reported it, that patients with neurological impairments are more likely to die from H1N1.

The problem is that I cannot get anyone in authority at the CDC or the NIH to listen. I need readers to email or call their senators and congresspersons in Washington.

Ask your senator or congressperson to contact the CDC and NIH to complain about CDC and NIH inaction on Vitamin D and H1N1. Also, ask your senators and representative to demand congressional hearings on Vitamin D and H1N1, before it is too late. Here is the link below, just click it and follow instructions to contact your own represenatives.

Allergy Season Survival

Preparation is the Key:

The allergy season is here, and it’s time to begin preparation for the onslaught of airborne allergens of many types. Many people are affected by these microscopic allergens, from mild to severe in their reactions. In some folks, these allergies lead to sinus or upper respiratory infections. Minimizing the effects of these allergens on your health will help minimize your chances of secondary infections. Here are some things you can do to minimize your exposure to these allergens.

- Keep you car’s ventilation system on re-circulate. This will prevent some of the pollen from entering the vehicle. Some cars have a pollen filter. Make sure you change it before and after each pollen season.
- Change your in-home furnace filters to the HEPA type. Also clean and/or change them often during the pollen season.
- Purchase a HEPA filter, and let it run continuously during the pollen season.

While the steps mentioned above can really help, it’s difficult to remove yourself from all allergen sources. This is where targeted whole-food nutritional supplements and herbal formulas can help reduce your body’s response to the allergens.

Targeted Products: (See suggested dosing chart for herbal preparations.)

Listed below are the key products to stock in your natural medicine cabinet for allergies. You should acquire these before the season starts to get a jump on them the moment you feel allergies kick in. These products may be used alone or in combination.

Allerplex: Sometimes the only product that is necessary for mild allergy reactions. Take 2 capsules 2 to 4 times a day; ¼, - ½ doses for children. Works well for young children and adolescents.

Albizia Complex: This herbal formula helps lower mast cell histamine release. It can be used for moderate to severe allergies. It reduces allergy symptoms quite well. Take 1 to 2 tablets 2 to 3 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Boswellia Complex: This herbal anti-inflammatory formula works synergistically with Albizia Complex for moderate to severe allergies. It helps reduce inflammation. Take 2 tablets 3 times a day for 7 to 10 days; then reduce the dosage as symptoms diminish.

Antronex: This beef liver extract helps in removing excess histamine from the blood stream.
Take 1 tablet 4 to 6 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Chewable Congaplex: This formula will help break up congestion caused by excess mucous excretions. Great for use with children!

Euphrasia Complex:
This herbal formula helps reduce mucous formation and the runny nose and watery eyes of allergies. Take 1 tablet 2 to 4 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Thymex: This is a terrific addition to Albizia Complex for reducing the allergic response. The thymus gland Cytosol formula helps balance the immune response. It helps to improve immuno-suppression which is depressed in moderately to severely allergic individuals.
Take 2 tablets 3 times a day with meals. It is most-effective when started a few weeks PRIOR to allergy season as well as Albizia /Complex.

Complications from allergies:

Sometimes seasonal allergies may result in other respiratory complications. Sinusitis and bronchitis may result from opportunistic bacteria present in the sinus and bronchial areas. There are a number of natural substances that can help eliminate sinusitis and bronchitis, if they’re caught in time. Also, many times, allergies will trigger an asthma attack.

Asthma:

PulmaCo: This synergistic formula will help alleviate allergy related asthma. It has herbs that act as decongestants, antibacterial action, and will provide relief from bronchial spasms that cause wheezing and shortness of breath. Note: Do not use in place of broncho-dilators!
Take 1 tablet 3 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Acute Bronchitis:

Andrographis Complex: This synergistic formula will help strengthen the immune system and has potent antibacterial action.
Take 1 to 2 tablets 3 to 4 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Broncafect Tablets: This formula helps with acute bronchitis or flu with cough.
Take 2 tablets 3 to 4 times a day for adults. Take for 7 to 14 days. (Caution: Do not use if high blood pressure, water retention, low potassium, allergy to the daisy family, or pregnancy is present.)

Fen-Gre: This formula helps break up thick mucous and congestion and gets it moving.
Take 2 capsules 3 to 4 times a day; ½ doses for children.

Golden Seal 500mg: This is one of the best herbs for restoration of the mucous membranes in the sinus, respiratory, and GI tract. It also has potent antimicrobial action. Take 1 tablet 2 to 3 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Sinusitis:

Fen-Gre: This formula helps break up mucous and congestion and gets it moving. Take 2 capsules 3 to 4 times a day; ½ doses for children.

Andrographis Complex: This synergistic formula will help strengthen the immune system and has potent antibacterial action. Take 1 to 2 tablets 3 to 4 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Golden Seal 500mg:
This is one of the best herbs for restoration of the mucous membranes in the sinus, upper respiratory and GI tract. It also has potent antimicrobial action. Take 1 tablet 2 to 3 times a day; ¼ to ½ doses for children.

Nasal Irrigation:
This is an excellent way to help restore the sinus passages and mucous membranes. It works very well in both acute and chronic sinusitis. (Caution: Do not use if allergic to any of the listed herbs.
½ cup of warm water;
½ tsp. sea salt;
1 ml. Albizia 1:2;
1 ml. Eyebright 1:2;
1 ml. Golden Seal 1:3.

Place this solution into a Neti Pot or clean sterile container. Irrigate the sinuses 2 to 3 times a day with the solution using the Neti Pot or a large dropper. Make the solution fresh each day. This will help minimize the effects of allergies in the nasal and sinus passages…

Other Important Considerations:

Sometimes, food sensitivities and allergies will compound airborne allergy reactions, making them worse. This entire group of allergens keeps the body in a systemic, elevated immune state, which can exaggerate airborne allergy symptoms. If you seem to have allergies all year-round, you may want to consider eliminating common allergenic foods such as wheat/gluten, dairy, eggs, and soy from your diet for a few weeks to see if your over-all allergy symptoms diminish. If they seem to, you may be experiencing additional allergy symptoms from food sensitivities. See your healthcare practitioner for more information.

Detoxification and Cleansing:

Now, take your health to the next level. Do the Standard Process Purification and Cleansing Program. This program will help improve the body’s ability to detoxify and may lower your response to seasonal allergens. For more information on the Purification Program, contact your healthcare practitioner.

Straight Talk About Health Care

Straight Talk About Health Care

Lifestyle Enhancements
Chiropractic care provides the foundation for good health. In addition, we need to incorporate healthy behaviors in our daily lifestyle, including exercise and balanced nutrition.

Everyone knows that exercise and nutrition are key to ongoing health, but very few people actually take action. Less than 20% of American adults do 30 minutes of exercise four or five times each week. An astounding 65% of Americans are overweight or obese. The results of these unhealthy behaviors are epidemics of diabetes and heart disease.

The good news is people can begin a healthy lifestyle, right now, today, right where they are. But the choice has to come from within. No one is going to do anything because they're told to or because they think they "have to". Health is a choice.

When a person chooses to be healthy, very good things begin to happen in all areas of her life.
In 2009 there's been lots of conversation about health care, both at the federal and state levels.1-3 Not all the talk has been friendly. Those favoring broad reforms describe serious problems in the health care "system". Those opposing change have spread rumors about impending "socialized medicine". Whatever the outcome, chiropractic health care continues to address many of the real shortcomings of the current health care situation in the United States.

First and foremost, chiropractic care focuses on the patient. So much of health care is focused on the profit-taking bottom line. Necessary services are denied coverage and unnecessary services are prescribed, all to further some faceless organization's return on investment. Chiropractic care has one goal in mind - to help the patient be healthy and get well in the fastest amount of time possible. Other forms of health care talk but chiropractic walks the walk. Chiropractic health care is truly patient-centered.

Chiropractic care is personalized. A patient in a chiropractor's office feels like part of the family. Chiropractors make the time to talk with their patients, asking the right questions and addressing their concerns. Chiropractic patients don't feel rushed. They don't feel as if their doctor's main priority is getting through this patient visit and moving on to the next. Chiropractic patients have the experience their doctor is very interested in their well-being and has designed treatment that will specifically address their specific problems. Chiropractic care is not a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach to health care.

The majority of the health care system is notoriously fragmented. Patients are bounced from one specialist to another, as various doctors attempt to diagnose a small part of a complex problem. In contrast, chiropractic care is holistic, addressing many of the health requirements of the whole person. Chiropractic treatment restores balances to the nervous system and musculoskeletal system, addressing multiple problems at once. Also, many chiropractors design rehabilitative exercise protocols and nutritional programs for their patients, as well as provide postural recommendations and stress management techniques.

And, chiropractic care is available to the entire family - toddlers, young people, parents, and grandparents. Chiropractic treatment is safe and gentle, and highly effective for a broad range of conditions. Whether an 80-year-old grandmother has osteoporosis-related lower back pain or an 8-year-old softball player has an injured knee, chiropractic care has good solutions for both.

Chiropractic directly addresses many problems in today's health care system. Chiropractic is a results-driven, cost-effective method focused on holistic health care. Chiropractic care is an integrated system that effectively promotes a family's wellness and well-being.

Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia Syndrome

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) affects an estimated 2 percent of the population. Conventional therapies are limited in the success of treating this complex and unexplained condition. Current treatment is largely comprised of prescribing different medications for the varying symptoms in a trial and error approach. Research shows that as many as 90 percent of people with fibromyalgia have turned to complimentary and alternative medicine to manage their symptoms. Acupuncture, in particular, has become a popular treatment choice and has shown to be an effective treatment for FMS.

What is Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

Fibromyalgia is a medically unexplained syndrome characterized by chronic widespread pain, a heightened and painful response to pressure, insomnia, fatigue, and depression. While not all affected persons experience all associated symptoms, the following symptoms commonly occur together:

• chronic pain
• debilitating fatigue
• difficulty sleeping
• anxiety and depression
• joint stiffness
• chronic headaches and jaw pain
• difficulty swallowing
• dryness in mouth, nose, and eyes
• hypersensitivity to odors, bright lights, and loud noises
• inability to concentrate (called "fibro fog")
• incontinence
• irritable bowel syndrome
• numbness or tingling in the fingers and feet
• painful menstrual cramps
• poor circulation in hands and feet (called Raynaud's phenomenon)
• restless legs syndrome

Fibromyalgia is diagnosed when there is a history of widespread pain in all four quadrants of the body for a minimum duration of three months and pain when pressure is applied to at least 11 of 18 designated tender points on the body. This condition does not result in any physical damage to the body or its tissues and there are no laboratory tests which can confirm this diagnosis.

Symptoms often begin after a physical or emotional trauma, but in many cases there appears to be no triggering event. Women are more prone to develop the disorder than are men, and the risk of fibromyalgia increases with age.

From an Eastern Perspective

The Oriental medicine theory of pain is expressed in this famous Chinese saying: "Bu tong ze tong, tong ze bu tong" which means "free flow: no pain, no free flow: pain."

Pain is seen as a disruption of the flow of Qi within the body. The disruption of Qi that results in fibromyalgia is usually associated with disharmonies of the Liver, Spleen, Kidney and Heart Systems.

The Acupuncture Treatment

Oriental Medicine does not recognize fibromyalgia as one particular disease pattern. Instead, it aims to treat the specific symptoms that are unique to each individual depending on their constitution, emotional state, intensity and location of their pain, digestive health, sleeping patterns and an array of other signs and symptoms. Therefore, if 10 people are treated with Oriental medicine for fibromyalgia, each of these 10 people will receive a unique, customized treatment with different acupuncture points, different herbs and different lifestyle and dietary recommendations.

Because the symptoms of fibromyalgia are highly variable form one person to another, a wide array of traditional and alternative treatments has been shown to be the most effective way of treating this difficult syndrome. A treatment program may include a combination of psychological or behavioral therapies, medications, exercise, acupuncture, herbal medicine and bodywork.

If you have fibromyalgia, acupuncture and Oriental medicine may be what you’ve been looking for to ease your symptoms and reclaim your health and vitality. Please call for a consultation today.

The Latest Gadget!

How many of us have gotten the latest and greatest gadget, cell phone, I-phone etc. My wife was given Razor when they were popular. Great phone but the battery life was horrible...

Same thing with my laptop, great computer but if the battery is dead guess what happens when I forget the plug? I have a great piece of equipment & technology that is absolutely useless without the power source behind it!

How frustrating it is to know I have e-mails to check, documents to print and lets not forget checking my Facebook Friends and Twitter updates!

The same is true for your body. I have been a Chiropractor for over 18 years and yes we are back pain Doctors by default. We actually are nervous system specialists, we treat the body through the spine, which is the power source of all existence!

Every breath you take and every move you make (love that song) happens because of your nervous system. Fortunately, most of it automatic (Autonomic Nervous System.) like breathing, heart beat, digestion etc. I know God knew better not to put us in charge of all that!

It is so important that the nervous system is encased with bone, your skeleton, skull and spine. Problems arise early on with multiple stresses, chemical, physical and emotional stress takes its toll as does the aging process itself.

So whats my point: If you only visit a chiropractor for Pain relief that's great, however your missing the point. Chiropractic is a prevention & wellness approach if used correctly how often you get treated is up to you and your chiropractor but think of it as a part of your healthy lifestyle, in my opinion the most important part.

You can swallow all the vitamins you want, eat all the healthy food you desire, exercise everyday and get your muscles massaged until you say ahhhhhhhh, if your Nervous system is not functioning at peak performance (and it is not) then you are really just existing and not thriving...

We have computerized non-invasive equipment to asses your nervous system. We also asses your posture and show you its relationship to deteriorating health and yes back and neck pain!

Have a great day and remember it's not how you look on the outside but how you function on the inside. There is no magic pill, injection or surgical procedure that can improve your function like natural Chiropractic care can!
